The effect of firewood moisture content on the energy efficiency of a boiler, fuel consumption, and the production of flue gases when 1 GJ of heat is produced. Fuel
Oct 29, 2008· Borrowed a moisture meter from a woodworker friend and checked them out. At the end of a 16" piece, the meter was pegged at the low end of the scale (6%). Cut off 2" and retested: still pegged low. At 4" in, it was just starting to read at 7%. In the middle of the piece, it measured 15%. I'm guessing the average moisture content was below 10%.
Bare in mind we are trying to assess the AVERAGE moisture content. So my suggestion is that you split a log lengthways with your axe and measure from the end and the centre. The average will be closer to the end than the centre, so consider a number 1/3 of the way from the lowest to the highest reading.

For optimal burning, firewood should be dried, or “seasoned,” until its moisture content is less than 20 percent. Firewood with a moisture content higher than that may eventually burn, but it

Jul 15, 2013· Probably the biggest and most common failure new, and old, wood burners make again and again is burning wood that is not properly dried. The simplest, most accurate way of "measuring" the moisture content of wood is with a moisture meter. Next to matches a moisture meter is one of the cheapest wood burning tools a person can buy. nuff said

Cited by: 3 A.A. Rentizelas, in Biomass Supply Chains for Bioenergy and Biorefining, 2016. 6.4.5 Degradation management during storage. The degradation of biomass during storage is tightly connected to the moisture content of the biomass. As mentioned in Section 6.4.1, moisture levels below 15% have been found to inhibit anaerobic microbial activity and allow for safe long-term storage of biomass.
In 2017, Woodsure, supported by Defra, Hetas and the Stove Industry Alliance, introduced their 'Ready to Burn' quality assurance scheme which guarantees a moisture content of less than 20% for firewood when it carries the 'Ready to Burn' label. Of course you can easily season your own wood, which can take up to two years, but this will save you considerable money on your heating bills.
Mar 13, 2019· To some extent, I can compensate for excess moisture by adjusting airflow to the firebox and gasification chamber and burn wood up to 30 percent moisture. But at 30 percent, efficiency goes down and steam exits the chimney. So I check the firewood moisture content with a moisture meter used for lumber, but it only measures the outer 1/4-inch.
