How Are Pellets Made? Pellet Mill Process. Truckloads of raw materials are brought to pellet mills every day and can arrive in many different forms. Some of the raw material may be sawdust, wood chips, lumber mill scrap, and even full trees unsuitable for lumber. The raw materials may be green, or freshly cut, may be partial dry or even kiln dried.

To make the mold, cut a pellet sized hole in a piece of wax-paper or aluminum foil. Lay it on top of one piece of (moist) clay. Then put your pellet in the hole on top of the clay. Press a second piece of clay over top of the pellet and the wax-paper. When you pull it back apart, take the pellet out, and you should have a perfect pellet mold.

Some materials take more heat and pressure to form a pellet than others so they are pre heated. In some cases the dryer will heat the material enough.
